Prepping for the end of the world

I like most everyone around me now a days is surrounded by thoughts of an impending apacalyose. World ending catastrophes are about the most mainstream point of view as well. How could they not be? we all came of age in beautiful desolation of Charelton Heston's masterworks, Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes 1&2, and the Omega Man. You only need to watch the beautiful title sequence by the great Saul Bass to wonder how far in the future are we really?

Then came zombies...
Now doomsday preppers.

I live in Southern California, and I was in Los Angeles for the big Northridge quake in 93. and I was also in the bigger loma prieta quake in northern California five years earlier. I went through a personal stage of dispair during which I fed upon the writings of Col. Rodger 'Coot' Hardee who was an unapologetic survivalist. I come from Michigan where we had our share of hard core survivalists ready with their bugout escape plans. The northern Michigan wilderness was Hemmingways muse for a time as well. So I did a bunch of research about surving disaster. and I studied group dynamics, and I was in a number of genuine disasters in addition to earthquakes , and I was witness to a tornados destruction close up, and a tsunami, and a few other hairy situations. I learned to shoot a hand gun. I owned a shotgun for personal protection. Did you know that you can shoot at zombie targets at practice range. They come in an impressive array of characters. Pizza boy, secretary etc. and they are realistic to the point that you'd forget that you are firing at human siloutte. Make it easier to shoot straight if you can do it with a smile, eh? Zombies.... I was wating for that moment when it all came crashing down. Then I realized that before I started choosing my shelter site in the Santa Monica mountains I should check my earthquake supplies. I have built them up over several years; food for 3 days, water, light source, batteries, Cash! $300 in Cash is going to go a long way. No ATMS! If you do nothing else to prepare for your local disaster do this; Keep $300 in small bills where ever you can accece them in at safe place. Under the mattress perhaps?

Northern lights seen farther south than usual

Northern lights seen farther south than usual

Atlanta (CNN) -- The northern lights came to the Deep South on Monday night, making them visible hundreds of miles farther south than they normally would be. Scientists call it a coronal mass ejection. To the rest of us, the brilliant shades of green, orange and red that danced across the night sky might simply be called beautiful or eerie. The northern tier of the United States -- places like Seattle, Minneapolis or Boston -- is normally the southern limit for the solar flares, meteorologist Jim Branda at the National Weather Service office in Memphis, Tennessee, said. But on Monday night, the display -- also known as the aurora borealis -- could be seen as far south as Oklahoma City, Memphis and Atlanta. The light show was caused by a solar outburst. "A storm on the sun's surface was blown off, and the solar wind scattered it," Branda said, explaining what created the natural light show. "The energy and magnetism interact with the earth's atmosphere and the magnetic field." The Twitter universe lit up with comments. Some said the display was "stunning," while others called it "wonderful." Enjoy it while you can, Branda said. The southern light show normally only happens once every three or four years. If the sky is cloudy, it might be seen only once every 10 years in southern states, according to Branda
